In Austria, the tradition of the balls is to be enjoyed for sure.

During the Carnival period, which runs from December 31st to Ash Wednesday, there are sometimes up to 300 balls. It’s a true institution in this country!

There is the famous Opera Ball: the most elegant and opulent of all. But there are balls of all kinds, such as: the Flower Ball usually held in the Rathaus the Housemaid Ball, the Philharmonic Orchestra Ball, the Butcher Ball, the Weightlifter Ball … The goal is for everyone - or almost everyone – to find the perfect match of a ball!

Some countries have the Oscars or the Cannes Film Festival, but Vienna has its Opera Ball! This event is of such magnitude that all television stations in the country broadcast the event. The paparazzi hope to take the photo of the year, and fashion experts speculate on which designer gowns these ladies are going to wear… The Vienna Opera House, where the ball is held, is located downtown about 7 minutes from the Rathaus City Hall.

The Viennese Waltz originates from old Austrian and German dances in the countryside. It consists of six steps, looks like the tango and is twice as fast as the Boston Waltz. In fact, the complexity stems mainly from its twirling.

Attendance at these balls formal dress is required: dresses for ladies and tuxedo for men. Forget your evening dress? Don’t worry; there are several stores in Vienna that can rent you one, such as:
